Classic arcade games often explain themselves through motion: enemies approach, objects fall, and the player's first mistake teaches the goal faster than a manual could. That connects nicely with a historical detail: Attract modes are the self-running demonstrations arcade machines use when nobody is playing, effectively turning idle time into a tiny commercial for the next coin. The phrase 'one credit' is arcade language for a promise that may not survive contact with the first boss.

One for quiz night
Street Fighter II reached arcades in 1991 and helped make head-to-head fighting cabinets social magnets. A single machine could produce a queue of challengers and a local pecking order without any online matchmaking at all. A second surprise: Dance Dance Revolution debuted in Japanese arcades in 1998 and replaced the joystick with a floor pad. Suddenly an arcade score could depend on footwork, stamina and whether the player was willing to dance in public.
