High-score initials transformed anonymous machines into local noticeboards; three letters could become a tiny public reputation lasting until someone unplugged the cabinet. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: Arcade sound effects had to cut through real room noise, which helps explain why classic machines are full of short, sharp tones that remain recognizable decades later. A high-score table is social media for people limited to three letters and no comment section.

Tiny fact jackpot

NBA Jam exploded into arcades in 1993 with exaggerated dunks, two-on-two basketball and the famous 'on fire' state after consecutive baskets. Realism was invited, but spectacle got the better seat. And for something completely different: Street Fighter II reached arcades in 1991 and helped make head-to-head fighting cabinets social magnets. A single machine could produce a queue of challengers and a local pecking order without any online matchmaking at all.
