Arcade & Classic Games · 21

Difficulty ramps often happen through speed rather than new rules, letting the player understand everything while still losing because the familiar problem stops waiting politely. A related fact is worth keeping. Arcade difficulty was shaped partly by economics: a machine had to be exciting enough to earn another coin without ending the player's turn so quickly that it felt unfair. Arcade difficulty rises gently until the game remembers it was built to eat coins.

Before the next game

Track & Field became an arcade hit in 1983 by turning athletic events into furious button tapping. Players quickly discovered that technique applied not only to virtual athletes but also to protecting the cabinet from enthusiastic human hands. A different kind of surprise: NBA Jam exploded into arcades in 1993 with exaggerated dunks, two-on-two basketball and the famous 'on fire' state after consecutive baskets. Realism was invited, but spectacle got the better seat.
