Strategy & Defense Games · 16

Randomness can improve strategy when players know the range of outcomes, because planning around risk is more interesting than pretending uncertainty does not exist. A related fact is worth keeping: Tower-defense maps are path puzzles in disguise. The enemies follow routes, while the player's real task is deciding where limited coverage produces the most value. A resource pile is just an army that has not decided what shape it wants to be yet.

Odd but true

Defense games often become interesting when the strongest unit cannot cover everything. The real puzzle is deciding which problem you are willing to leave slightly under-protected. A second detour: Sid Meier's Civilization was released in 1991 and turned thousands of years of history into a sequence of strategic turns. Few games let pottery, diplomacy, tanks and spaceflight share the same save file so naturally.
