Strategy & Defense Games
Herzog Zwei on the Sega Mega Drive is often cited as an important real-time strategy precursor because players directly controlled a transforming unit while commanding others. There is a practical reason this matters in games: Randomness can improve strategy when players know the range of outcomes, because planning around risk is more interesting than pretending uncertainty does not exist. The map has no sympathy for a beautiful plan placed three tiles too far left.

Wait, really?
Chess probably developed from earlier Indian games more than a thousand years ago. The modern queen became dramatically more powerful in Europe during the late fifteenth century, speeding the game up. Another rabbit hole starts here: Go has exceptionally simple rules but an enormous decision space. The board’s 19-by-19 grid creates more possible positions than anyone could realistically enumerate during play.
