Strategy games often reward tempo, the idea that making the opponent respond can be valuable even when the immediate move wins no territory or resources. A related fact is worth keeping. Dune II from 1992 helped establish many conventions of the modern real-time strategy game: base building, resource gathering and direct unit control on one active battlefield. Turn-based games kindly provide unlimited time to regret a move before pressing End Turn.

The rabbit hole
The term 'zugzwang' in chess describes a position where having to move is itself a disadvantage. It is the rare strategy situation where doing nothing would be better—if the rules allowed it. And here is a completely different twist: Board-game maps often divide space into territories because territory makes conflict visible. A border turns an abstract advantage into something players can point at and argue about.
