StarCraft became a major competitive strategy game because its three factions were deliberately asymmetric rather than mirror copies with different artwork. A choke point is powerful because geometry reduces how many units can fight at once, allowing a smaller force to make the map do part of the defending. Defensive walls are excellent until the game introduces something that flies.

Fact break
The Elo rating system used in chess is named after Arpad Elo, a physics professor and strong chess player. His statistical system was designed to estimate relative playing strength rather than hand out a permanent label of 'good' or 'bad'. For the next piece of trivia: Chess probably developed from earlier Indian games more than a thousand years ago. The modern queen became dramatically more powerful in Europe during the late fifteenth century, speeding the game up.
