Shooting Games · 8
Sniper mechanics exaggerate patience by rewarding a pause, a narrow field of view and a single deliberate shot instead of constant firing. There is a practical reason this matters in games: Ammo scarcity can turn an action game into a planning game, because every missed shot starts to feel like spending money badly. The classic tactical plan is flawless right up to the moment another player has a different plan.

History got weird here
Quake, released in 1996, became a landmark for fully 3D first-person action and online multiplayer. It also helped popularize 'rocket jumping', where an explosion is used as movement rather than just an attack. For the next piece of trivia: The term 'first-person shooter' became common only after the genre already existed. Earlier games were often described with phrases such as maze game, 3D action game or simply 'like DOOM'.
