Audio does navigation work in shooters too. Footsteps, reload sounds and distant fire can reveal information before an opponent appears on screen. The history behind the category adds another layer. Cover systems changed the tempo of many shooters by making exposure itself a resource: every second outside safety becomes a small tactical bet. The crosshair is tiny because apparently all responsibility must fit into four pixels.

Two minutes of rabbit hole
Galaga became famous for enemies that could capture the player’s fighter. If you rescued it later, the two ships could combine for extra firepower—a risk-and-reward idea players still remember. And here is something completely different. DOOM spread in 1993 through a shareware model: the first episode could be distributed freely, while the full game was sold separately. That helped the game travel through offices, schools and home PCs at remarkable speed.
