Crosshairs are a user-interface invention as much as a weapon aid, translating a three-dimensional aim direction into one tiny mark on a flat screen. There is one more layer to consider. A good hit effect answers several questions in milliseconds: did the shot connect, how hard did it hit, and should the player keep firing? The universal shooter mystery is why reloading feels urgent only after stepping out of cover.

The curious bit
DOOM spread in 1993 through a shareware model: the first episode could be distributed freely, while the full game was sold separately. That helped the game travel through offices, schools and home PCs at remarkable speed. A second surprise: Quake, released in 1996, became a landmark for fully 3D first-person action and online multiplayer. It also helped popularize 'rocket jumping', where an explosion is used as movement rather than just an attack.
