Shooting Games

Midway's Gun Fight from 1975 was the first arcade video game to use a microprocessor, a hardware change that helped make more complex animation practical. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story. Respawn timers are social pacing tools in multiplayer: too short and mistakes feel meaningless; too long and the punishment becomes watching everyone else have fun. Every shooter contains at least one doorway that looked perfectly safe until it wasn't.

Tiny fact jackpot

Spacewar!, created in 1962, is one of the earliest influential computer games built around aiming and firing. Two tiny spacecraft duel around a star whose gravity constantly bends their paths. Another rabbit hole starts here: Computer Space, released in 1971, was one of the first commercially sold arcade video games. Its space-combat controls were difficult enough that players sometimes needed instructions before they could even enjoy the fight.
