Weapon spread is a balance dial disguised as inaccuracy; designers can make movement, crouching or short bursts matter by changing a few numbers behind the reticle. The category's past supplies the companion fact: Space Invaders did not need realistic weapons to create pressure; the formation itself became more threatening as the remaining aliens moved faster. The crosshair is tiny because apparently all responsibility must fit into four pixels.

Tiny history break

Duck Hunt used Nintendo’s Zapper light gun, but the television did not 'see' where you pointed in the way a camera would. The console briefly flashed targets so the sensor could detect whether the aim lined up. Here is one more useful piece of useless knowledge. Asteroids, released in 1979, gave players a wraparound space arena: fly off one side and you appear on the other. That simple rule created frantic battles without requiring a large map.
