Audio does navigation work in shooters too. Footsteps, reload sounds and distant fire can reveal information before an opponent appears on screen. Put that beside this bit of history. Reloading became more than an animation once games made magazine size a tactical rhythm: shoot, count, find cover, reload, repeat. A dramatic explosion is often the game's way of saying that subtlety has left the building.

Something to tell a friend
Early arcade shooting galleries predate video games by decades. Mechanical targets, light sensors and carnival-style ranges already turned accuracy into entertainment long before pixels arrived. There is also this: Galaga became famous for enemies that could capture the player’s fighter. If you rescued it later, the two ships could combine for extra firepower—a risk-and-reward idea players still remember.
