A good hit effect answers several questions in milliseconds: did the shot connect, how hard did it hit, and should the player keep firing? Put that beside this bit of history: Rail shooters deliberately remove navigation so the player's attention can stay on aiming, timing and target priority. The safest ammunition remains the round you did not fire into a wall two seconds earlier.

Tiny fact jackpot
Spacewar!, created in 1962, is one of the earliest influential computer games built around aiming and firing. Two tiny spacecraft duel around a star whose gravity constantly bends their paths. One more for the mental shelf: Duck Hunt used Nintendo’s Zapper light gun, but the television did not 'see' where you pointed in the way a camera would. The console briefly flashed targets so the sensor could detect whether the aim lined up.
