DOOM's 1993 shareware release helped popularize both first-person shooters and a distribution model where a large part of the audience could try the game before paying. Ammo scarcity can turn an action game into a planning game, because every missed shot starts to feel like spending money badly. Nothing improves map knowledge like repeatedly discovering the same ambush from the victim's side.

One for quiz night
Computer Space, released in 1971, was one of the first commercially sold arcade video games. Its space-combat controls were difficult enough that players sometimes needed instructions before they could even enjoy the fight. One more curious detail: Early arcade shooting galleries predate video games by decades. Mechanical targets, light sensors and carnival-style ranges already turned accuracy into entertainment long before pixels arrived.
