Shooting Games · 20

Respawn timers are social pacing tools in multiplayer: too short and mistakes feel meaningless; too long and the punishment becomes watching everyone else have fun. The history behind the category adds another layer. Reloading became more than an animation once games made magazine size a tactical rhythm: shoot, count, find cover, reload, repeat. A sniper scope can make the world look calm seconds before it becomes extremely not calm.

A quick detour

Time Crisis used a foot pedal as part of its arcade controls in 1995. Pressing it let the player pop out to shoot; releasing it ducked behind cover and reloaded, turning a simple pedal into the rhythm of the whole game. The next bit is equally fun. The House of the Dead reached arcades in 1996 and helped cement zombies as perfect light-gun targets: obvious silhouettes, dramatic entrances and absolutely no respect for personal space.
