DOOM's 1993 shareware release helped popularize both first-person shooters and a distribution model where a large part of the audience could try the game before paying. Another angle makes it more interesting: A boss with glowing weak points is basically a puzzle wearing armor and making a lot of noise. The crosshair is tiny because apparently all responsibility must fit into four pixels.

The fun-history drawer
Counter-Strike began in 1999 as a fan-made modification for Half-Life. Its round-based team play became so popular that the mod grew into a standalone series and a long-running competitive game. The next fact has its own story: Time Crisis used a foot pedal as part of its arcade controls in 1995. Pressing it let the player pop out to shoot; releasing it ducked behind cover and reloaded, turning a simple pedal into the rhythm of the whole game.
