Sokoban, created in Japan in the early 1980s, makes pushing boxes difficult for one reason: unlike many puzzle actions, a bad push cannot simply be pulled back. Spatial puzzles often exploit mental rotation, asking the player to imagine an object from a viewpoint the screen is not currently showing. The brain's favorite puzzle feature is apparently the exact moment it gets to say 'oh.'

A small but excellent fact

Nonograms, also called picture crosswords or Picross, reveal an image through number clues describing runs of filled cells. The picture is the reward for solving a tiny bookkeeping problem perfectly. Here is another one to steal for a quiz night: The '15 puzzle' caused a craze in the late nineteenth century. Some scrambled positions are mathematically impossible to solve, which is a wonderfully cruel property for a puzzle sold to the public.
