Puzzle & Thinking Games · 11

Minesweeper turns incomplete information into logic; a number does not reveal a mine, it reveals a constraint on several possible squares around it. Number puzzles can feel mathematical even when the arithmetic is trivial; the real work is often structure, ordering and exclusion. Puzzle players call it experimentation when the first four plans fail in completely different ways.

A little game-room trivia

Magic squares fascinated mathematicians for centuries. In a normal magic square, rows, columns and diagonals share the same total even though each number is used only once. The category has another odd corner too: Chess problems are not the same thing as ordinary chess games. A composer can build a position specifically around one elegant forced idea, more like a logic puzzle than a competition.
