Word puzzles are unusual because the player brings a lifetime of vocabulary into the game, making difficulty depend partly on knowledge acquired far outside the rules. Put that beside this bit of history: Match-three games are satisfying partly because one move can create a cascade, letting the board continue solving itself after the player's hand has stopped. The final piece always looks much more obvious after it is in the correct place.
