Puzzle designers use symmetry as both help and misdirection; a repeated pattern can reveal structure or convince the player to assume two sides behave the same when they do not. That connects nicely with a historical detail: Nonograms encode pictures as number clues along rows and columns, turning image-making into a process of deduction rather than drawing. A hint used one second too late is not help; it is an accusation.

Odd but true
The '15 puzzle' caused a craze in the late nineteenth century. Some scrambled positions are mathematically impossible to solve, which is a wonderfully cruel property for a puzzle sold to the public. Another tiny history lesson: Magic squares fascinated mathematicians for centuries. In a normal magic square, rows, columns and diagonals share the same total even though each number is used only once.
