Puzzle & Thinking Games · 66
A good puzzle can feel impossible and then obvious within one second; the board did not change, only the player's model of it did. The design side has its own twist: Spatial puzzles often exploit mental rotation, asking the player to imagine an object from a viewpoint the screen is not currently showing. The brain's favorite puzzle feature is apparently the exact moment it gets to say 'oh.'

Fact break
Mastermind was created by Mordecai Meirowitz and released commercially in 1970. The code-breaking game reduces deduction to colored pegs, but a good guess is really a tiny experiment designed to eliminate possibilities. A second surprise: Real Escape Game events began in Japan in 2007 and helped turn the videogame idea of escaping a locked room into a physical group activity. Suddenly the suspicious drawer and hidden key were no longer just pixels.
