Lemmings made crowd behavior the puzzle in 1991, asking players to assign limited skills to small creatures that otherwise kept walking toward trouble. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: Spatial puzzles often exploit mental rotation, asking the player to imagine an object from a viewpoint the screen is not currently showing. A good clue feels useless right up until the second it becomes the only thing that matters.

A cryptogram can be difficult even when every symbol has a simple substitution. Language patterns leak information: common letters, repeated words and word lengths become clues. A different kind of surprise: 2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014 as a small browser project and spread extremely quickly online. The rules fit into a sentence, yet the board has a nasty habit of filling one move before everything finally comes together.
