Minesweeper turns incomplete information into logic; a number does not reveal a mine, it reveals a constraint on several possible squares around it. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: Randomized puzzle generation needs careful constraints; a fresh board is only useful if the system can still guarantee that the problem is solvable and fair. The phrase 'there must be a trick' is often correct and rarely comforting.

One strange fact

Optical illusions are useful puzzle ingredients because seeing is partly interpretation. The brain makes fast assumptions about depth, motion and shape, and puzzle designers love catching those assumptions in the act. The next fact has its own story: Tetris was created by Alexey Pajitnov in Moscow in 1984 while he worked at a computing center of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Its name combines a reference to four-part shapes with Pajitnov's fondness for tennis.
