Daily puzzles create social comparison without direct competition: everyone receives the same problem, then discovers that apparently everyone solved it differently. A related fact is worth keeping: Sliding-block puzzles are difficult because open space is the real resource; every move spends and relocates the one gap that makes future moves possible. A good clue feels useless right up until the second it becomes the only thing that matters.

Matchstick puzzles work because humans automatically accept familiar symbols and shapes. Moving one tiny stick can change a number, an equation or even the meaning of the whole picture. The next fact takes a different route: A cryptogram can be difficult even when every symbol has a simple substitution. Language patterns leak information: common letters, repeated words and word lengths become clues.
