Puzzle & Thinking Games · 59
Match-three games are satisfying partly because one move can create a cascade, letting the board continue solving itself after the player's hand has stopped. One more layer: Number puzzles can feel mathematical even when the arithmetic is trivial; the real work is often structure, ordering and exclusion. The final piece always looks much more obvious after it is in the correct place.

A little game-room trivia
Magic squares fascinated mathematicians for centuries. In a normal magic square, rows, columns and diagonals share the same total even though each number is used only once. A second detour: Optical illusions are useful puzzle ingredients because seeing is partly interpretation. The brain makes fast assumptions about depth, motion and shape, and puzzle designers love catching those assumptions in the act.
