Lemmings made crowd behavior the puzzle in 1991, asking players to assign limited skills to small creatures that otherwise kept walking toward trouble. There is a practical reason this matters in games: A hint is most useful when it changes the player's question rather than simply supplying the next action. A hint used one second too late is not help; it is an accusation.

History got weird here
Pentominoes are shapes made from five equal squares joined edge to edge. There are twelve distinct free pentominoes, and fitting them into rectangles can become surprisingly difficult. A different kind of surprise: Tangrams use only seven pieces, yet those seven shapes can form thousands of silhouettes. The puzzle became an international craze after travelling from China to Europe in the nineteenth century.
