The name Tetris combines 'tetra,' referring to four, with tennis, one of Pajitnov's favorite sports. There is a practical reason this matters in games: Puzzle designers use symmetry as both help and misdirection; a repeated pattern can reveal structure or convince the player to assume two sides behave the same when they do not. A puzzle is a machine for making the obvious wait until you have tried everything else.

Two minutes of rabbit hole
Sudoku became a global craze under a Japanese name, but number-placement puzzles with similar rules appeared earlier in American puzzle magazines. The name roughly means 'single numbers'. The next fact has its own story: The Tower of Hanoi puzzle was marketed in the nineteenth century with a story about monks moving 64 golden disks. At one move per second, the full task would take far longer than the age of the universe.
