A hint is most useful when it changes the player's question rather than simply supplying the next action. Put that beside this bit of history: A good puzzle can feel impossible and then obvious within one second; the board did not change, only the player's model of it did. A hint used one second too late is not help; it is an accusation.

The curious bit
The Tower of Hanoi puzzle was marketed in the nineteenth century with a story about monks moving 64 golden disks. At one move per second, the full task would take far longer than the age of the universe. The next bit is equally fun: Pentominoes are shapes made from five equal squares joined edge to edge. There are twelve distinct free pentominoes, and fitting them into rectangles can become surprisingly difficult.
