Puzzle & Thinking Games · 2

Word puzzles are unusual because the player brings a lifetime of vocabulary into the game, making difficulty depend partly on knowledge acquired far outside the rules. Put that beside this bit of history: Sliding-block puzzles are difficult because open space is the real resource; every move spends and relocates the one gap that makes future moves possible. A puzzle is a machine for making the obvious wait until you have tried everything else.

Trivia unlocked

The first modern-style newspaper crossword is usually credited to Arthur Wynne and appeared in 1913. Its grid was diamond-shaped rather than the familiar square layouts used today. The next fact takes a different route: Sudoku became a global craze under a Japanese name, but number-placement puzzles with similar rules appeared earlier in American puzzle magazines. The name roughly means 'single numbers'.
