Minesweeper turns incomplete information into logic; a number does not reveal a mine, it reveals a constraint on several possible squares around it. The best 'aha' moments are compressed tutorials: after solving one clever mechanism, the player usually understands an entire family of future problems. Every elegant solution has an awkward ancestor made of guesses, dead ends and one unreasonable assumption.

Odd but true

The '15 puzzle' caused a craze in the late nineteenth century. Some scrambled positions are mathematically impossible to solve, which is a wonderfully cruel property for a puzzle sold to the public. One more fact worth keeping: Chess problems are not the same thing as ordinary chess games. A composer can build a position specifically around one elegant forced idea, more like a logic puzzle than a competition.
