Puzzle & Thinking Games · 17
Word puzzles are unusual because the player brings a lifetime of vocabulary into the game, making difficulty depend partly on knowledge acquired far outside the rules. The category's past supplies the companion fact: Logic puzzles often become easier when the player marks what cannot be true, because eliminating possibilities can be more powerful than guessing what is true. A three-minute puzzle can produce forty minutes of notes if pride becomes involved.

A quick detour
Tetris was created by Alexey Pajitnov in Moscow in 1984 while he worked at a computing center of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Its name combines a reference to four-part shapes with Pajitnov's fondness for tennis. Another rabbit hole starts here: Mastermind was created by Mordecai Meirowitz and released commercially in 1970. The code-breaking game reduces deduction to colored pegs, but a good guess is really a tiny experiment designed to eliminate possibilities.
