Nylon stockings went on sale in the United States in 1940 and became an immediate sensation. During World War II, nylon was redirected toward military uses such as parachutes, making stockings suddenly much harder to find. One more strange-but-useful detail: The zipper took decades to become ordinary clothing hardware. Early versions appeared in the nineteenth century, but the modern hookless fastener became much more practical in the early twentieth century.
