The rabbit hole
Perfume’s name comes from the Latin 'per fumum', meaning 'through smoke'. Long before spray bottles, fragrant materials were often burned so scent travelled through the air. A different kind of surprise: The bikini was introduced in 1946 and named after Bikini Atoll, where atomic tests were making headlines. The name was chosen because its creator expected the new swimsuit to cause an equally explosive reaction in fashion.
