This actually happened
The familiar twist-up lipstick tube became practical in the 1920s. Before mechanisms like that, lipstick was commonly sold in small pots, paper wrappings or push-up metal containers that were much messier to carry. Another tiny history lesson: Ebenezer Butterick helped popularize graded paper sewing patterns in the 1860s. Selling patterns in multiple sizes made it much easier for home sewers to reproduce fashionable garments without drafting every shape from scratch.
