A quick detour

High heels were not originally a women-only fashion. In early modern Europe, wealthy men wore heeled shoes too, partly because heels were associated with status and horseback riding. Another rabbit hole starts here: The zipper took decades to become ordinary clothing hardware. Early versions appeared in the nineteenth century, but the modern hookless fastener became much more practical in the early twentieth century.
