Nylon stockings went on sale in the United States in 1940 and became an immediate sensation. During World War II, nylon was redirected toward military uses such as parachutes, making stockings suddenly much harder to find. Meanwhile, this bit of history is hard to resist: High heels were not originally a women-only fashion. In early modern Europe, wealthy men wore heeled shoes too, partly because heels were associated with status and horseback riding.
