This actually happened

The familiar twist-up lipstick tube became practical in the 1920s. Before mechanisms like that, lipstick was commonly sold in small pots, paper wrappings or push-up metal containers that were much messier to carry. A separate bit of trivia: Nylon stockings went on sale in the United States in 1940 and became an immediate sensation. During World War II, nylon was redirected toward military uses such as parachutes, making stockings suddenly much harder to find.
