The fun-history drawer

Ebenezer Butterick helped popularize graded paper sewing patterns in the 1860s. Selling patterns in multiple sizes made it much easier for home sewers to reproduce fashionable garments without drafting every shape from scratch. The rabbit hole keeps going: The zipper took decades to become ordinary clothing hardware. Early versions appeared in the nineteenth century, but the modern hookless fastener became much more practical in the early twentieth century.
