Asteroids used crisp vector graphics in 1979, drawing luminous lines instead of filling the screen with conventional pixel artwork. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: Difficulty ramps often happen through speed rather than new rules, letting the player understand everything while still losing because the familiar problem stops waiting politely. Arcade games specialize in the sentence 'I know exactly what to do,' immediately followed by not doing it.

Odd but true
Arcade cabinets charged for attempts, so designers had a financial reason to make games easy to understand but difficult to master. Confusion was bad; challenge was profitable. Another tiny history lesson: The attract mode on an arcade machine exists to sell the game while nobody is playing. Flashing demos, high scores and sound effects were basically tiny animated advertisements built into the cabinet.
