Difficulty ramps often happen through speed rather than new rules, letting the player understand everything while still losing because the familiar problem stops waiting politely. That connects nicely with a historical detail: Dragon's Lair used LaserDisc animation in 1983, trading free movement for spectacular cartoon visuals far beyond what ordinary arcade hardware could draw in real time. Old arcade sound effects are short because they had a difficult job: be heard over every other old arcade sound effect.

Something to tell a friend

Pong was released by Atari in 1972 and became one of the first major arcade videogame hits. Its entire world is two paddles, one ball and the dangerous discovery that simple rules can eat an afternoon. And this deserves a place in the same trivia drawer: Frogger turned crossing a road into arcade drama in 1981. Cars, logs, turtles and a time limit proved that a daily nuisance could become a perfect videogame premise.
