A joystick gate can physically restrict movement directions, which is why classic four-way games can feel different on hardware designed for eight-way control. The player-facing version of the idea is simple. Arcade cabinets were physical interfaces: steering wheels, trackballs, light guns and giant buttons could make one machine feel completely unlike the cabinet beside it. Old arcade sound effects are short because they had a difficult job: be heard over every other old arcade sound effect.

One for quiz night
Street Fighter II reached arcades in 1991 and helped make head-to-head fighting cabinets social magnets. A single machine could produce a queue of challengers and a local pecking order without any online matchmaking at all. One more strange-but-useful detail: Space Invaders arrived in 1978 and helped turn videogame arcades into a mass phenomenon. Its descending rows of aliens created pressure with almost no story at all.
