Dragon's Lair used LaserDisc animation in 1983, trading free movement for spectacular cartoon visuals far beyond what ordinary arcade hardware could draw in real time. Bonus fruit, ships, bells and other strange objects became score bait because a rare target gives players a reason to break their safe routine. A continue screen is thirty seconds of negotiation between pride, curiosity and another coin.

Two minutes of rabbit hole

Pac-Man was released in 1980 and deliberately moved away from the era’s heavy focus on space shooting. The maze, ghosts and eating mechanic made it immediately recognizable to a much broader audience. The rabbit hole keeps going: Tempest used vector graphics, drawing bright geometric lines instead of filling the screen with ordinary pixels. Its glowing tunnel still looks striking because it never tried to imitate reality.
