Arcade & Classic Games · 72

Arcade difficulty was shaped partly by economics: a machine had to be exciting enough to earn another coin without ending the player's turn so quickly that it felt unfair. Wave structure is elegant pacing: the same controls can feel new when speed, quantity, spacing or enemy behavior changes between rounds. Arcade difficulty rises gently until the game remembers it was built to eat coins.

Tiny history break

Dance Dance Revolution debuted in Japanese arcades in 1998 and replaced the joystick with a floor pad. Suddenly an arcade score could depend on footwork, stamina and whether the player was willing to dance in public. One more page from the weird history book: Pac-Man was released in 1980 and deliberately moved away from the era’s heavy focus on space shooting. The maze, ghosts and eating mechanic made it immediately recognizable to a much broader audience.
