Arcade & Classic Games · 66

Arcade difficulty was shaped partly by economics: a machine had to be exciting enough to earn another coin without ending the player's turn so quickly that it felt unfair. There is one more layer to consider. Wave structure is elegant pacing: the same controls can feel new when speed, quantity, spacing or enemy behavior changes between rounds. A high-score table is social media for people limited to three letters and no comment section.

Fact break

Q*bert debuted in 1982 with a pyramid of cubes drawn in a pseudo-3D perspective. Its title character even swore in a made-up symbol language when things went wrong, decades before emoji made that sort of thing feel normal. A second surprise: Track & Field became an arcade hit in 1983 by turning athletic events into furious button tapping. Players quickly discovered that technique applied not only to virtual athletes but also to protecting the cabinet from enthusiastic human hands.
