Cabinet artwork mattered before the first second of play. Side panels, marquees and control layouts had to sell an experience from across a noisy arcade. Another angle makes it more interesting: Alternating two-player modes created competition without simultaneous hardware; friends could share one cabinet and still turn every life into a public performance. The phrase 'one credit' is arcade language for a promise that may not survive contact with the first boss.

A fact with good replay value

Missile Command arrived in 1980 during the Cold War and gives the player no final victory, only increasingly difficult waves until the cities are lost. That bleak structure is unusually honest for a game about stopping incoming missiles. Here is another one to steal for a quiz night: Street Fighter II reached arcades in 1991 and helped make head-to-head fighting cabinets social magnets. A single machine could produce a queue of challengers and a local pecking order without any online matchmaking at all.
