Attract modes are the self-running demonstrations arcade machines use when nobody is playing, effectively turning idle time into a tiny commercial for the next coin. Meanwhile, the mechanics tell a second story: A score display gives failure a souvenir. The run ends, but the number remains as evidence that the next coin has a target. The safest pattern works perfectly until the game becomes fast enough to expose that it was never safe.

Wait, really?

Defender hit arcades in 1981 with horizontal scrolling, a radar display and a famously busy control panel. It demanded enough buttons that simply knowing what everything did was part of becoming good at the game. For the next piece of trivia: NBA Jam exploded into arcades in 1993 with exaggerated dunks, two-on-two basketball and the famous 'on fire' state after consecutive baskets. Realism was invited, but spectacle got the better seat.
