High-score initials transformed anonymous machines into local noticeboards; three letters could become a tiny public reputation lasting until someone unplugged the cabinet. There is a practical reason this matters in games: Pattern learning became a classic arcade skill because deterministic enemy behavior rewards players who notice that chaos is sometimes only pretending to be random. Classic games have tiny rulebooks and enormous opinions about timing.

The fun-history drawer
Arcade joysticks and buttons are brutally simple interfaces, but experts can develop incredibly precise muscle memory. The cabinet looks like furniture until someone plays it at championship speed. A different kind of surprise: Defender hit arcades in 1981 with horizontal scrolling, a radar display and a famously busy control panel. It demanded enough buttons that simply knowing what everything did was part of becoming good at the game.
