High-score initials transformed anonymous machines into local noticeboards; three letters could become a tiny public reputation lasting until someone unplugged the cabinet. The player-facing version of the idea is simple: Arcade sound effects had to cut through real room noise, which helps explain why classic machines are full of short, sharp tones that remain recognizable decades later. Old arcade sound effects are short because they had a difficult job: be heard over every other old arcade sound effect.

Ms. Pac-Man introduced new mazes and more varied ghost behavior, helping prove that a sequel could meaningfully remix an arcade formula rather than merely repeat it. The next bit is equally fun: Q*bert debuted in 1982 with a pyramid of cubes drawn in a pseudo-3D perspective. Its title character even swore in a made-up symbol language when things went wrong, decades before emoji made that sort of thing feel normal.
