Classic arcade games often explain themselves through motion: enemies approach, objects fall, and the player's first mistake teaches the goal faster than a manual could. Put that beside this bit of history: High-score initials transformed anonymous machines into local noticeboards; three letters could become a tiny public reputation lasting until someone unplugged the cabinet. Three initials can contain an unreasonable amount of pride when they sit above everybody else's score.

One strange fact
Galaxian and Galaga made enemy formations feel more alive by sending attackers diving out of formation. Suddenly the safe-looking pattern at the top of the screen could attack from unexpected angles. The next fact has its own story: Dragon's Lair arrived in 1983 using laserdisc video to display hand-drawn animation that looked far more like a cartoon than ordinary arcade graphics. The trade-off was that players had to react to tightly scripted moments rather than roam freely.
